The San Diego Padres have appeared in 2 World Series (1984, 1998), won 2 National League pennants and appeared in postseason play 5 times in its 46 year history. Beginning play in 1969, the San Diego Padres have been symbolized famously by its world renowned mascot, the San Diego Chicken. The team has also had many great players appear in the Padres uniform, including Hall-of-fame inductee Tony Gwynn, Sr., whose 8 batting titles tie him for second all-time in MLB history. His number 19, along with that of Steve Garvey (#6), Dave Winfield (#31), Randy Jones (#35) and Trevor Hoffman (#51) are those of the only former San Diego Padres players to be retired by the team.
