The Boston Red Sox is one of the eight charter members of the American League, having been formed in 1901. Initially the team was named the Boston Americans before changing their name in 1908 to the present Red Sox. The Red Sox have played baseball in the confines of historic Fenway Park since 1912 and have laid claim to 13 American League pennants, the third most in the league. Boston has hoisted the World Series trophy on eight separate occasions, having last won in 2013 with a 4-2 series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
